C[O.sub.2] uptake and fixation by endosymbiotic chemoautotrophs from the bivalve Solemya velum
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the influence of pH, alternate sulfur sources, and electron acceptors on carbon fixation and to investigate forms of inorganic carbon which is taken up and fixed by the gamma-proteobacterial endosymbions of the protobranch bivalve Solemya velum. Symbionts fixed carbon most rapidly between pH 7.5 and 8.5 and under optimal pH, sulfide, and oxygen conditions, symbiont carbon fixation rates correlated with the concentrations of extracellular C[O.sub.2] and not with HC[O.sub.3.sup.-] concentrations.

Low-concentration kinetics of atmospheric CH4 oxidation in soil and mechanism of NH4+ inhibition
Article Abstract:
The mechanism of NH4+ inhibition of CH4 oxidation at near-atmospheric concentrations in three well-drained, N-limited forest soils without known endogenous CH4 sources was investigated through a simple steady-state kinetics technique. The consequences of nonammoniacal salts in parallel samples were also assessed to determine it they can be used for neutralizing NH4+-independent salt effects. Findings showed that NH4+ inhibition of atmospheric CH4 oxidation is due to enzymatic substrate competition.

Familiy- and genus-level 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes for ecological studies of methanotrophic bacteria
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe a group of oligonucleotide probes for distinguishing members of the methanotrophic group of bacteria. Methanotrophic bacteria use methane as their sole source of carbon and thus play an important role in the carbon cycle. They can also degrade a large number or organic contaminants in soil.
